May 28, 2008Barn Builder Profile: New England Shed & BarnNew England Shed & Barn been in business over 25 years. The family-owned company manufactures high quality outdoor wood storage sheds and barns, with custom designs and difficult installations the house speciality. Located in Kingston, Massachusetts, New England Shed & Barn mills their own lumber to insure both quality and the lowest prices. Service areas include Massachusetts (including Cape Cod), Rhode Island, Southern Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, as well as Eastern and Central (Hartford Area) Connecticut. The company has held true to their roots. "After operating a sawmill for a few years and having many customers buying lumber to build their own sheds," they wrote. "We decided shed manufacturing would be a perfect addition to our operation."
Construction methods: All of our sheds are stick built on the customers site using full dimension lumber: 2x6 floor joists and 2x4 framing lumber. Most popular roofing and siding: Our most popular roofing is our Architectural asphalt shingles. Premium grade novelty pine and pine clapboards are our most popular siding. For those who want the ultimate in appearance and the lowest maintenance the red cedar shingle option is a great choice. Most popular designs and sizes: The most popular design is the 10x12 Loft Design sided with novelty pine (shown below). With an 8/12 roof pitch and awning style windows it is very balanced and in scale to fit the architecture of most customers properties. Unique applications: Our sheds are used for summer sleep quarters, industrial offices, housing environmental clean up equipment where the Hazardous cleanup company wants an attractive structure, storing of antique cars, country vegetable stand, pool house/bar, fishing camps. Artist studio, smoke house for curing meats, and the most interesting is a storage shed to house an 1870 Mardi Gras float. One of our most challenging installations was on Clark’s island in Plymouth harbor where we had to transport all the building material by barge and land at high tide to offload. What makes New England Sheds and Barns stand out from the crowd? Our clapboard sided sheds are built like a boat. The clapboards lap one over the other fastened directly to the 2x4 wall studs eliminating the need for plywood sheathing. This keeps our prices typically 1/4-1/3 less than our competitors. More important this is a small company and the owner is always available to answer questions and address concerns. We also build on difficult sites and offer removal of old sheds, something the box stores do not do. And we do not charge sales tax!
