April 29, 2006Barn KitsWant to get that barn built in a hurry? Barn kits have long been one of the most popular ways to quickly get a barn raised and protected from the elements. The barn kits of today have evolved from a long and storied past. Imagine ordering a barn from the Sears catalog! That's just what many a farmer did back in the early 1900s. You'd pick your mail-order barn kit out of the Sears catalog and have it delivered by train. You can see a number of examples of Sears barn kits at The Barn Journal. When compared to yesteryear, a modern barn-raising can happen in a fraction of the time. (Alas, the prices tend to be a good bit higher than the good old days ... with adjustments for inflation, of course.) These days, the choices abound, from majestic timber framed barns, through economical pole barns and utilitarian steel buildings. Chances are, if you can picture a barn in your head, you can find a barn kit to make it happen in a hurry. The one exception? Although sold by Sears back in the day, round barn kits appear to be quite a rare commodity in this day and age. Round barns, most often designed with a center silo, were built to make work inside the barn easier. Posted by geekbooks at April 29, 2006 10:41 AM |
