Free Shed!

The free shed is an elusive beast. When opportunities arise, they must be seized ... literally ... for those opportunities seldom last long. There's no question that lumber is the biggest single expense in building a shed. When a container ship load of lumber started washing up on a UK beach, the locals took action. Vehicles of every shape and size were quickly crammed with wooden treasure.

Outside of a cargo ship dumping its lumber on your doorstep, free sheds are hard to find. For most folks, the best bet might be to watch Craigslist to see what crops up. While you'll have to weed through a bunch of listings for commercial shed builders, homeowners often post their unwanted backyard buildings, yours for the asking ... as long as you're willing to haul it away, of course. (Don't look a free shed in the mouth or expect it to be delivered.)

A quick search of our local "free shed" listings came up with a free three-year-old 10' x 9' aluminum shed and a rather unattractive 10' x 10' x 10' wooden shed. There were also a number of possibilities listed under "free lumber" ... where flexibility is key.

Success will come to those who are patient and persistent in their search. Photo listings can help weed out the worthwhile from the worthless.
