Kayak Shed

There's a right and a wrong when it comes to choosing a new shed. The right way is to match the design, size, and shape of the shed to stuff you need to stow. When those goodies include a kayak that's nearly 14 feet in length, you've instantly defined a key dimension ...

Storing a kayak of that length over head might be tough, but surely not impossible ... given the right shed design. I'd look for either a set of gable or perhaps gambrel plans, with a generous loft area that has plenty of room between the rafter triangles. I'd add a good sized old-fashioned overhead door at loft level and wrap the horizontals overhead with scrap carpet. This would allow you to slide the kayak in and out of the shed without scraping on the wood.

The majority of sheds are designed in 24-inch increments. A 10 foot by 16 foot shed would provide plenty of room to store the kayaks and lawn gear, with room for a workbench and built in storage. A 12' x 16' or 14' x 16' design might be more aesthetically pleasing.
