Portable On Demand Storage Containers

Good chance you've seen portable on demand storage containers popping up around your town. If not, it's only a matter of time. Portable on demand storage is a marvelous idea ... a truck drops a shipping container off at your place and you fill it up with your stuff. The container can either stay at your location (as long as it doesn't run afoul of your town codes or neighbors) or get taken back to a warehouse location.

You pay for the convenience, of course. How much? Well, once again, that depends on your geographic location and the amount of local competition. I plugged some numbers into a local portable storage container service website and saw the the prices were more than a tad higher than the standard self-storage facility (shown in this post). Monthly charges ran between $159 and $189, for an 8x12' container, depending on whether it left on location or stored in the warehouse. Delivery charges tacked on up to $300.

A portable on demand storage unit is only less expensive than a backyard shed when used for a short-term need. In these cases, the best choice is to have the container carted back to the warehouse ... lest you cause your neighbors to become irate. After all, it's not hard to imagine that persnickety towns will quickly pass ordinances against leaving shipping containers in your driveway.

All in all, portable on demand storage containers are a very cool idea when used under the right circumstances. Out of sight, out of mind, out of pocket ...
