May 30, 2007Shed FramingIt’s always wise to start a shed project with an honest-to-goodness set of shed plans ... but unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Ben from Canada wrote, “I’m starting a shed and have the foundation in and the floor done. For the wall panels, how far apart should I place each 2 by 4? Also how do I incorporate windows and the door?" While framing a shed needn’t be as exacting as a residential job, solid shed framing pays dividends for years on end. Wall studs are best spaced with the 2 x 4s 16-inches apart on center. While some builders might get away with 24-inch spacing, I don’t recommend the practice. The number of stud you might save will be far overweighed by the decrease in structural integrity. Incorporating the windows and door is much like any other conventional construction process. Take careful measurements, frame out the opening for the windows, then sheath the structure. Follow whatever specific instructions that might come with the windows and be sure to have plenty of shims on hand, and don’t forget to caulk.
