Make no mistake about it. Shopping for storage sheds can be downright confusing. With so many different types of storage sheds, the purchase decision often comes down to what's available locally. Unfortunately, what's ready-to-go often isn't the best value. You might see a nice looking storage shed at a nearby garden center or home improvement store (say Home Depot or Lowes). It might even be on sale, at a seemingly large discount. But how do you know you're getting the best shed for your hard-earned dollars?

The process of buying a storage shed is similar to any major purchase. It pays to be an informed consumer. You need to learn what's out there, what it costs, and the relative advantages of each type of construction.

The first decision is size. How much stuff do you need to stow? Can you get away with a smaller structure, perhaps a Rubbermaid storage shed, or do you need something more substantial? Do you need to store a closet's worth of junk or a barn full?

The next question is duration. Do you need a permanent outdoor storage shed or are your needs strictly temporary? If you don't have long term needs, you might be able to use a container storage unit. Shipping containers aren't handsome, by any means, but it hardly matters if the unit will be gone in a couple of months.

Once you've decided to make a permanent addition to your landscape, it comes down to build or buy. There's nothing quite like the experience of building your own shed, particularly if you're handy with tools and enjoy the work.

Building a storage shed is a rewarding experience in many ways, but before we get too carried away with ourselves, keep in mind that it is a good bit of work. Not huge, mind you, but significant. If you're not fully confident in your building skills, you can always start with a storage shed kit of some sort.

If you want the coolest outbuilding on the block, you'll start with a quality set of storage shed plans. You don't need to have an architect design a set of custom plans. And you don't need to build it yourself. You just need to know where to look to find the plan of your dreams. Don't want the bother of building it yourself? Not to worry! You needn't lift anytning heavier than a checkbook (or credit card). And worse, you'll be reminded of your mistake every day, when you look out into the yard.
