October 06, 2004Web HostIf you're in the market for a new Web hosting company, there are two things you can count on: All Web hosts are not created equal. And not all Web hosts treat their customers equally. I've used a number of hosting services over the years and I haven't always been happy with the service I've received. To tell the truth, over the past few months, I've been downright unhappy with one of my current hosts ... I pay a premium price for the hosting services on that site. By premium, I mean that I easily pay 5x what I could if I wanted bare bones service. I expect that site to be up 24/7 without a hitch. But while I can usually rely on the site being up, I can't always rely on good performance. Now that Web hosting has become a total commodity, the entry-level prices are so low that you can host a site for a month on a virtual server for less than what it costs for one ticket to a first run movie. I've rambled on about getting a dedicated server before. I still haven't gotten off my duff. When I total up the amount I'm spending on with various hosting companies, it only comes up to roughly half what I'd spend for a low end dedicated server. So I shuffle along with my ragtag collection of virtual hosts ... waiting for the day when I have enough wacky little sites to tip the scale and justify the iron ...
